The BRIT Awards took place last night, with stars like Rihanna, Ed Sheeran and One Direction taking home awards. Adele won the coveted Best British Album after sweeping up 6 Grammys last week, and was understandably honoured and speechless when she arrived on stage.

She allowed fans to cheer for nearly 25 seconds before she stumbled through a patriotic statement about her win at both the BRIT Awards and at the Grammys.

Suddenly, host James Corden had to cut her off so Blur could take an 11-minute spot on stage. Corden said “I am so sorry, I can’t believe I’m about to cut you off, I’m so sorry…”

To which Adele responded with a bitter “You’re going to cut me off? Can I just say then, goodbye and I’ll see you next time around, yeah?” and waved her middle finger at the crowd as the camera cut away to Blur.

Big wins for Adele
This was a big night for Adele, as it was only her second performance since her throat surgery recovery (the first being the Grammys, what a life). She roared Rolling in the Deep (in a lower key than usual) and though it didn’t have her usual force, it was still a notable performance. She then won Best Female Artist and had her full 45 seconds to make proper Thank Yous. This speech was a little silly but heartfelt, but she left things a little vague, almost like she knew she had Best Artist in the bag.

While fans are backing Adele and booing the BRIT Awards for making Corden cut her off, Let’s watch a little playback of the “acceptance speech” Adele started to give:

She spends the first 26 seconds saying thanks for the cheering and fanning herself.

At the 27-second mark she toots her own horn about her 6 Grammy wins and 2 BRIT Award wins.

At 35 seconds she says “I’m so, so…” and we all think she’s going to say, oh I don’t know: grateful, thankful, humbled? Nope. “… proud!” (To be British).

She barely manages to recognise that her fans are in the room before Corden moves in to cut her off- and if you pause the video when he begins, it’s at 44 seconds, only 1 second short of a standard acceptance speech. And she hadn’t even gotten to the accepting yet.

Ok, yes, it was a huge award for her, but she should have known that live TV moves on and acceptance speeches are only extended for A-List veterans like Meryl Streep and Sally Field.

Let’s be honest. Adele does have a massive voice and a sweet stage demeanour, but she seems to have developed a bit of a Diva attitude in recent months. And really, Adele- BRIT Awards are less likely to invite you back on stage to finish your speech if you flip the bird.

Adele was allegedly livid as she stormed out of the venue after the show. ITV, who aired the event, has issued an apology to the star. Adele also had the opportunity at the post-show press conference to clarify that her middle finger wasn’t meant to offend her fans, she was waving it at “the suits” of the BRIT Awards.

While the collection focuses rather more on the high society participants in the pursuit of the Iron Throne, a quick peruse of the full collection at Women’s Wear Daily shows a bit of the Night’s Watch black fur and a couple of pieces that remind me of Bronn’s chainmail and cuirass outfit.

But of course the real majesty shows up in pieces like those pictured here: on the right, one of the best Daenerys Targaryen cosplays I’ve ever seen, while on the left is something that looks like Jamie Lannister’s loungewear got into a scuffle with Varys’s sleeves. An eagle eye over the full collection could also find Cersi’s gowns or Peter Baelish’s shouldery goodness lurking in the wings.

The upshot is that this is a pretty cool addition to the fashion pantheon, one that’s certainly got a bit of attention in the GoT fan community, and a pretty dynamic departure for Helmut Lang. The cuts and palettes are rather daring in comparison to their usual fare, and there’s definitely a sense of vitality and playfulness in the design. The show’s violence and glamour emerges in the assymetrical cuts and earthy colours, and whether you’re watching on the Wall or basking in the Dornish sun, Lang’s cold- and warm-weather options have you covered.

Particularly cool to see this happening at the New York fashion week, which tends to err on the side of simplicity when it comes to design. Bravo!

Always cool without a hint of try-hard, Ryan bases his everyday look around neutral basics and menswear standards such as jeans and the ever-present vest top, always done up with low key or classic prints. It’s a pretty low maintenance look to go with as long as you have some key pieces on hand.

With the basics so simple, outerwear is what really ties the look together. Yes, the fashion gods have spoken and it’s OK to rock the double denim with care. Rule of thumb is to pair your denim jacket up with jeans of a different shade. Straight-up Canadian tuxedos are a no-go. For a beginner though, a peacoat or leather jacket might be easier to handle. Allsaints do some incredible work with worn-in leather at highstreet prices, but you could always go the vintage or DIY route if that’s your thing (and by DIY, I mean get someone to run over your jacket with a car).

Of course, with a great piece of outerwear, you can’t just throw on any old pair of shoes. Desert boots are pretty much an essential in any laid-back guy’s wardrobe. It fills the gap between a formal oxford and an overly casual sneaker, making a versatile boot for work while its colour lightens it up for summer months. You’ll also need a good pair of work boots. Red Wings are a good, affordable choice.

Sure, this all seems pretty straightforward. But what makes Ryan’s fashion choices stand out? One word: fit. Sure, you might come across some people who hold by the standby of sizing up two sizes, but the one thing that’s going to make a fairly simple outfit work is always going to be fit. Straight and slim-straight fit on jeans works awesomely; never, ever go near a pair of bootcuts again. At least, not until ’70s style makes another cycle through menswear. Also, if you’re having issues acquiring a hoodie that isn’t cut gigantically, American Apparel’s have a pretty good fit at a more reasonable price- and since they sell to screenprinters, you can get away with buying in bulk for savings if you go through a third party.

Still need a bit more je ne sais quois? Get yourself a necklace, man. Getting a necklace with a pendant that hits fabric rather than your bare chest takes a bit of the feminine feel off it; aim to get a chain long enough that the pendant sits on your breastbone or a few inches below. As for where to find the cool jewelry, take a good look at what Maison Martin Margiela has to offer. They’re great at doing simple yet unusual. Add a classic pair of hornrim glasses or sunglasses (always classic, think modern Atticus Finch) if you need ‘em and you’re ready to go. Now get out there and charm some people.

The most likely candidate for taking up one of the judging chairs is none other than Janet Jackson. She was interviewed recently and only added fuel to the fire by not denying that she was in talks about being on the show.

There are other names being linked to the X Factor judging panel and some of them are fairly out there. Everyone knows that Beyonce has just had a baby but would that mean she would want to slow down and say…..judge a talent show? Well rumours of her being offered one hundred million dollars might be enough to get her involved. This rumour has been quashed by Simon Cowell claiming that it is “nonsense”.

Another diva to have her name linked to the show is Mariah Carey but once again Mr Cowell has rubbished reports claiming that she will not be on the list. Other rumoured targets that haven’t been completely written off include Madonna and Katy Perry.

When looking to who is going to replace Steve Jones, the main name bouncing around is Ryan Seacrest. Well known for working with American Idol, he has the experience to be able to carry the show. Again, there are more names getting thrown about but most of them have also been linked to the judging panel. Mariah Carey, Perez Hilton, and Katy Perry have all been linked. Even Cheryl Cole has been mentioned in making a return to the X Factor set-up.

It appears that once again the judges are getting  more attention than the contestants. Sometimes it appears that the judging panel are there merely to have their egos massaged. Who ever gets the position will have to ensure that they put on the best show they can. It’s obvious that Simon Cowell has no problem letting people go.

The production is due to run for three weeks commencing 22^nd September, and will be Fry’s first significant foray into West End theatre in 17 years. His last attempt at a complete theatrical run was in 1995, when he was set to star opposite Rik Mayall in a production of Simon Gray’s Cell Mates. Fry famously walked out of that production after only three shows, pleading stage fright and vanishing for a few days before turning up in Belgium.

Fry later attributed the incident to his bipolar disorder, and says he contemplated suicide during those lost days before finally deciding against it. He has also explained his fear at that time as “play fright” rather than “stage fright”, which he has stated is a totally different thing.

Since that ill-fated turn on the stage, Fry seems to have gotten his demons under control. Aside from his best-known job as presenter of the BBC panel show QI, he has also hosted numerous television programmes and live events, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.

He has performed a number of one-man spoken word shows and acted in a variety of film and television roles, including his Golden Globe-nominated depiction of Oscar Wilde in Wilde and most recent appearance as Mycroft Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Fry has also ventured back into the theatre zone with a production of Cinderella at the Old Vic during Christmas 2007 and a voice part in the 2011 pantomime Dick Whittington and his Cat at the Lyric Hammersmith.

All of which leaves me feeling encouraged that Fry’s Shakespearean venture will be cause for major delight rather than embarrassment. The character of Malvolio also offers plenty of scope for a meaty performance, with elements of uptight prudishness, outrageous ambition and pitiful self-delusion – surely Fry will delight in all that.

Furthermore, Fry will be acting opposite award-winning Globe veteran Mark Rylance as Olivia. Rylance was the Globe’s first artistic director (from 1995 to 2005) and pioneered the theatre’s adoption of authentic Elizabethan theatre customs – including the use of an all-male cast. He’s a daring actor in his own right and there’s huge potential for unforgettable chemistry in the production.
