Justin Bieber has been teasing his fans over the past few months with tweets and video clips, slowly unveiling his latest single, Boyfriend.
The track from the unfinished album Believe was finally dropped in the US last week, earning over 520,000 downloads on iTunes in its first week. This whopping amount of downloads broke records set by pop stars before him including Lady Gaga’s Born This Way.
The track was set to be released in the UK May 20th, but the generous lad has bumped the release to this weekend, Sunday April 8th.
No word on the video release date, though Bieber has been teasing fans as mercilessly as ever with two 20-second video clips of what it might be like.
The song is admittedly catchy, with a slight more grown up feel for the now 18-year-old singer. Fans have identified a Justin Timberlake-like sound with the slow beat, talking and falsetto. And the lyrics, well, they’re certainly pop-star styled:
“I got money in my hands that I’d really like to blow
Swag swag swag, on you
Chillin by the fire while we eatin’ fondue
I dunno about me but I know about you
So say hello to falsetto in three two…”
As if we believe that Justin Bieber has to convince a girl to be his girlfriend. He is, after all, Canada’s fan choice. At the Canadian JUNOS last weekend, Bieber took home the Fan Choice Award, beating out Canadian icons like Drake, Arcade Fire and the 40-album veteran Ginette Reno. Bieber does know how to engage with his fans though, and that has paid off for him in more ways than one.
520,000 ways in one week, maybe.
