A popular song by up and coming singer/songwriter Elizabeth Grant, better known by her stage name as Lana Del Rey has been turned into a humorous parody.
‘Video Games‘ has been hilariously covered by internet personality and comedienne Holly Laurent. Holly has changed the title and lyrics so that they are based on the massively anticipated book-to-movie The Hunger Games, which is due to be released in cinemas around the UK in March.
The Hunger Games is an adaptation of a trilogy of books by popular screen writer and author Suzanne Colins. The first instalment is highly anticipated and is expected to be a box office hit to rival the likes of Twilight. The books are based in a post-apocalyptic future of America where children must fight to the death every year in order to provide for the district they live in.
The books lie within the science fiction realm and therefore differ from Harry Potter and Twilight which are considered to be within the fantasy genre. This predominantly means that the books are a little more realistic and the themes could potentially be a little darker. I have personally read the books, as well as Twilight and Harry Potter and can safely say that it is definitely more violent. But enough about the books.
It seems Holly Laurent has picked up on two things making waves on the internet at the moment: The Hunger Games and Lana Del Rey’s hugely talked about performance on Saturday Night Live last month. In fact, the show that comedienne Holly performs on actually did a parody of Lana during their show last week. Holly has cleverly created a video using footage from the only two trailers available for the movie and undercut vintage images of scenes that mimic those expected to be in the film. Holly has also brought the same ‘earthy’ feel that is present in Lana’s music video.
The parody video has been viewed over 100,000 times in the past couple of days and has spurred on other fans to redo other Lana Del Rey music videos as Hunger Games-themed reels. ‘Born to Die’ has a number of Hunger Games mash-ups popping up all over YouTube. It’s looking like Holly might have started a bit of a trend.
Unfortunately if you haven’t read The Hunger Games this video won’t make much sense apart from the fact that making fun of Lana Del Ray is pretty funny. If you haven’t read the books, do us a favour and read ‘em because we’ll be talking about them loads in the coming months. For now, here’s Holly Laurent performing ‘The Hunger Games’.
