Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis
After a week of swirling break-up rumours, French actress Vanessa Paradis has at last publically denied suggestions that she and long-time partner Johnny Depp have split up.
When the latest round of rumours broke, Vanessa was busy touring the promotional circuit for her latest film, Café de Flore. No doubt much to the actress’s dismay (although maybe not the film’s producers’), the allegations that she and Johnny were living apart quickly became the focus of all publicity.
At first Vanessa was vague in addressing the rumours, bemoaning more generally the endless tabloid reports surrounding her personal life. However, French television programme Grand Journal finally asked her flat out if the stories were true, to which she retorted strongly that they were not.
The news may be disappointing to many of Johnny’s fans, but others (myself included) will be delighted that this Hollywood couple are still defying the odds 14 years after they first hooked up.
In an industry in which celebrity romances and even marriages (paging Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears here) only seem to last hours, it’s refreshing to see a high-powered couple so determinedly together and happy. Johnny famously gave up his partying lifestyle to start a family with Vanessa, and the couple now live a low-key life in rural France with their children Lily Rose, 12, and Jack, 9. They have never married, yet appear far more stable in their relationship than many celebrity couples who have exchanged vows.
Nevertheless, the pair are simply too famous to escape break-up rumours entirely. The recent allegations are the latest in a string of reports concerning Johnny’s alleged tendency to stray. In the last year it has been suggested that Johnny flirted with various extras on the set of his film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and a photo emerged of him supposedly kissing his publicist, Robin Baum.
The rumours were further fanned by Johnny and Vanessa’s recent solo appearances on the red carpet, but that can in large part be attributed to their busy professional lives and globe-trotting careers. Vanessa has been quoted voicing her concern that the current spate of rumours could prove hurtful to her children, so hopefully for their sake, her recent denial will help put things to rest for at least the time being.
