In this-is-how-we-network news, the young singer/songwriter Justin Bieber treated his young lady Selena Gomez, who is also famous for things, to a romantic evening in LA’s Staples Centre, the home stadium for basketball’s LA Lakers and LA Clippers, and ice hockey’s LA Kings. The arena seats almost 20,000 people, and thanks to his selling the arena out three nights running during his last tour, he booked out the entire place; for free. To watch Titanic and have a steak.
For those keeping score, this film was released when Bieber was three and Gomez five. But why not, it’s a great movie. And look, these guys are at the head of business empires, have a cumulative total of over twenty million twitter followers: these are the kind of connections you would expect in that position. Heck, either of these guys could rob a bank at gunpoint and have it blow over by Thursday. The Staples Centre had a night, no-one was playing or performing, they wanted to thank a top-selling performer, both parties get some free publicity, everybody wins.
@justinbieber romance isnt dead. treat your lady right fellas. #REAL
This tweet is beyond the reaches of parody. If I had to write a skit about the disconnect between celebrities and their fans, I would struggle to come up with something so searingly cruel as the world’s richest teenager wagging his finger at his fans/their boyfriends for not hiring out the Staples Centre for funsies. Then typing ‘real’ afterwards. Attention, anglophone teens! Nice try.
Which international sports stadiums would you hire out for your other half? Let us know in the comments.
