It’s the gift that just won’t stop giving no matter how much you want it to, a break-up drama that’s been front and centre of gossip mags for at least the past 6 years: Brangelina and the massive media implosion that was Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s break up.
Gossip mags have obsessed about Jen the Scorned Woman for ages, how she’s “unlucky at love” and doomed to be forever single (obviously that’s changed around a bit with her dating Justin Theroux). But after the long wait, are we finally getting to hear the story from the other camp? In a new interview with the magazine Parade (it’s a Sunday newspaper lifestyle insert that some major American newspapers carry, so expect the full interview this Sunday), Brad finally broke his silence about his marriage to Jen.
I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic. It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself… I think my marriage had somethign to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t.
He didn’t stop there, taking a moment to gush over Angelina Jolie’s mommy skills:
One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom. She is such a great mom. Oh, man, I’m so happy to have her.
OK, have to admit, to anyone reading the exchange, it sounds an awful lot like he’s blasting Jen for being hella boring back in the 90s, then throwing salt in the wounds by saying that leaving her for Angie was the best decision he ever made. And maybe Brad didn’t realise how it sounded either when he said it. A few hours after the story hit the airwaves, Brad changed his tune a bit, releasing a statement in which he said:
It grieves me that this was interpreted this way. Jen is an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman who remains my friend. It is an important relationship I value greatly. The point I was trying to make is not that Jen was dull, but that I was becoming dull to myself– and that, I am responsible for.
Could Brad be a fellow sufferer of foot in mouth disease? Or is this just a case of him being diplomatic? A few blind items over the years have pointed towards the cordiality being mostly for show, but then again, there’s bound to be a bit of misinterpretation when it comes to one of the biggest celebrity breakups of recent memory.
